About us

The Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority (The Authority) is an independent regulatory authority for mining and mineral resources in Malawi established under Section 5 of the Mines and Minerals Act, (No. 25 of 2023).

Following the repeal of the Mines and Minerals Act of 2019 and the enactment of the Mines and Minerals Act 2023, the Authority regulates the mineral sector in the development and utilization of mineral resources in line with sustainable development principles and practices and for the benefit of Malawians by: regulating the mining sector, regulating the exportation of minerals; monitoring the activities of licensees to ensure compliance with the Act and the terms and conditions of their licenses

Organization Overview

The Authority regulates the mineral sector in the development and utilization of mineral resources in line with sustainable development principles and practices for the benefit of Malawians by:

monitoring the activities of licensees while promoting and regulating local beneficiation

to ensure compliance with the Act and the terms and conditions of their licenses and downstream processing of minerals, including mineral value addition

promoting the harmonization of activities, plans, and policies

Concerned with sustainable development and utilization of mineral resources and ensuring their consistency with the overall national development policy

facilitating dispute resolution
 

facilitating dispute resolution or where necessary, resolving disputes, relating to the mining sector in consultation with relevant authorities; and performing any other functions as are necessary or incidental to the implementation of the Act

Malawi Mining Investment Forum

Malawi Mining Investment Forum is the inaugural international conference and expo event organized by the Malawi Government in partnership with the private sector and other stakeholders to promote Malawi’s mining (extractive) sector

The Government of Malawi aims to grow the mining sector to contribute at least 20% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a goal that will require robust legal, policy, and institutional frameworks; public-private partnerships in mineral exploration and mining; local beneficiation (processing and refining) or value addition; formalization of ASM to secure mineral wealth and revenue; and functional auxiliary sectors, mainly transportation, energy, and service sectors

Geological Survey Department is an institution within the ministry of mining that aims at conducting regional geological mapping and exploration of groundwater resources

Aim of Geological Survey Department is to acquire, monitor, update, archive and disseminate geoscientific information of Malawi in order to foster socio-economic development and contribute to poverty reduction through the utilisation and management of minerals and other geological resources

  • promote research on the economics of the mining sector including monitoring international commodity markets
  • promote and regulate local beneficiation and downstream
    processing of minerals, including mineral value addition
  • facilitate disputes resolution or where necessary, resolving
    disputes, relating to the mining sector in consultation with relevant authorities
